Bombs Away

Thursday brought more longshot winners, a Pick Six carryover of nearly $100,000 into tomorrow and rain that started falling after the conclusion of the races.
We mentioned trainer Jorge Periban in the Blog the other day and, sure enough, he struck again, this time with $61.00 winner GOTTA GO GAL in the 6th race. She was one of five double-digit winners (four in Pick Six races) on the card.
The late Pick 4 returned a whopping $9,612 and I wasn’t too far off on my suggested $72 Pick 4 ticket from the Premium Plays (view Free Sample below). I doubled the 5th race and got home favorite ROCKINSTOMPER. I used four horses in the next leg and caught ‘GAL (strictly off the barn change) at $61.00. In the 7th, I used three horses, purposely throwing out favorites TRUE XENA (Solis on the rail) and SMART CROWD (Lisa Lewis had been winless in California since coming here for HP fall meet). Tough beat when ‘CROWD ran down one my Best Plays on the card NAUGHTYLILHOTTIE (8-1) near the wire. And I had three horses in the last, including runner-up BRITE BOBBY, who got a perfect stalking trip but couldn’t go by the winner. Close but no cigar.
Victor Espinoza won a pair today to join Garrett Gomez at the top of the rider standings…P.Val’s scheduled return has been moved back a week to Jan. 17.
Trainer Talk: Bill Spawr was rightly P.O.’d when his BORDONARO was not among the top three Eclipse finalists in the sprint division. However, to say that he’d “love to run against those horses any time” is crazy. DISCREET CAT, who is probably the best horse in the world but shouldn’t have been one of the sprint finalists, would beat BORDONARO going any distance from 4 furlongs on up. And Ron McAnally dismissed his prolonged slump by saying, “Apparently, everybody seems to be worried about it but me.” Yes, Ron, we horseplayers (at least the good ones) do worry about trainer slumps that date back to Oct. 22.
